Metrology Society of India, the science of precision measurements, plays a vital role in the technological, industrial and economic development of the country. The technological process starts with research and development followed by industrial production, market transaction and finally the products reaching the consumer inside or outside the country. In this chain, precision measurements are needed in R & D activities, for the inspection of materials/components/sub-systems and quality control during the product process and then during the testing and evaluation of the final product for performance and reliability. Standardization which aims at reducing the variety in industrial products, interchangeability of component parts and sub-systems and finally, ensuring the quality and reliability is also based on precision measurements. Similarly, consumer protection in trade and commerce as well as in public health and safety measures also requires use of precision instruments. It is often said that status of industrial advancement of a country can be judged by the status of metrology in the country. Development of measurement science is also instrumental sometimes in generating new techniques of production, in facilitating innovations and their subsequent utilisation. Thus adequate metrological facilities and infrastructure are a pre-requisite for technological & industrial development. The techniques of measurements are getting more and more sophisticated with the advance of technology and today, the latest scientific concepts are being utilised in metrology.

Metrology Society of India was instituted in 1984 and registered under Registration of the Society Act XXI of 1860 keeping the above views. Its main objective is to provide a platform on which metrologists could meet and exchange their views and experiences. It also interacts with industries requiring application of metrology, science and sophisticated instrumentation. All the persons engaged in and connected with metrology may become the members of the society. This society has broadly six types of membership depending upon their experiences in the field of metrology as follows:

·          Fellow

·         Member

·         Associate Member

·         Student Member

·         Corporate Member

At present, the society has 132 Fellows, 367 members, 51 Associate members and 56 company members. The society functions through four advisory committees namely

1.      Programme Committee

2.      Membership Committee
